WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE PARISH

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

The accumulation of vast wealth while so many are languishing in misery is a grave transgression of God’s law, with the consequence that the greedy, avaricious man is never at ease in his mind: he is in fact a most unhappy creature.
Pope John XXIII

HARVEST APPEAL 2019

Message from Caroline:

Dear Friends, Harvest Appeal 2019: Dancing for Health at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales.
I have been speaking to Tracey who came to visit us when we previously supported Rubicon, whose members work on the oncology ward, those with cystic fibrosis, general surgery, short and long term patients, alongside physiotherapists and play specialists. Families face a lack of variety in their daily routine and the activities that they can take part in during long in-patient stays. NHS funding is not available to add extra activities and Rubicon are now running low on funds for their wonderful dance activities in the hospital. I would really love it if we could support this local charity for our Harvest Appeal. Rubicon brings joy to the poorly children and Tracey has told me they would be very grateful for our support. Collection boxes are out from today. People are also invited to bring foodbank gifts from the list opposite for children to bring to the altar at our Harvest service.
With love from Caroline xxx

MEETING ROOM CAFÉ;

Come and enjoy our monthly veggie and vegan community café at affordable prices!
We are completely volunteer run and strive to provide an open, relaxing community space for Cathays to come together and unite whilst enjoying a drink, cake or something warmer. There is live music each month and various craft and jewellery stalls will make an appearance.

The Meeting Room is a fully inclusive community venture, held within the Church of St Andrew and St Teilo, Cardiff, usually on the first Saturday of each month. The next opening will be on Saturday 5th October, 11am - 2pm.

FOOD BANK

Food Bank items needed for next few months are: Long-life Fruit Juice, UHT Milk, Tinned Rice Pudding, Tinned Potatoes, Tinned Fruit, Sponge Puddings. No Beans or Spaghetti for a while, please. And this message from the Foodbank Administrator Sara Redwood: "Thank you for all you do to support Cardiff Foodbank. We see our use continue to rise and in 2018 we provided food for 13,248 individuals, with 150,840 tons of food and toiletries given out. Thank you for helping us to do this".

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Timothy Coleman as the new Director of Music for Church of St Andrew and St Teilo, Cardiff: Timothy Coleman is a tenor and conductor, recently graduated from a Masters in Vocal Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He grew up in Aberdeen, studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University, then spent five years as a freelance choral singer and lay-clerk with New College Oxford before coming to Cardiff. While in Oxford, he was a 2015-16 Fellow with NYCGB, 2016-17 Young Conducting Scholar with Sing for Pleasure, and conductor of both the Blackbird Leys Choir and workplace choir Oxford Analyrica. Recent singing engagements include the lead role of Aleks in the premiere of Michael Betteridge's community opera Across the Sky for the Cheltenham Festival; covering Howard Boucher and singing chorus in Dead Man Walking with WNO; and Tamino in The Magic Flute with Opera in a Box. In August/September he is singing in the chorus with Northern Ireland Opera in their production of Die Fledermaus. In his spare time, Timothy is an enthusiastic cook and occasional hillwalker. He is really excited to join the choir and congregation at St Teilo's, and to build on all the work done by them and Alex Thacker over the previous eight years.

THE CHOIR

The choir meets on Wednesdays in St.Teilo's at 7.45 pm, and on Sundays at 10.30 am before the morning service. New members are welcome in all voice parts. It is a young and very friendly choir .

AUTUMN TERM EVENTS IN THE PARISH OF CATHAYS

Details of events, other than normal services, this Autumn term are available to view or download here.

THE FUTURE OF ST. TEILO'S

Visitors to this website may be aware of the controversy regarding the future of St. Teilo's as a result of a recent decision made by the Bishop of Llandaff, the Right Reverend June Osborne. The current (September 2019) situation is that the Development Group will continue negotiations with the Bishop and the Resource Church in the hope that both the Resource Church and the St. Teilo's congregation can worship at different times in the same building, working together with and for the local community. Substantial repairs to the building are scheduled to start after Christmas and, whilst they take place, the current congregation will worship at St Michael's. The Resource Church will not open until September 2020 at the earliest. Because of the building works St.Teilo Arts will not be using the building for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime the Church Committe met in St. Teilo’s after the morning service on 1st September, and on Wednesday 4th September in St. Michael’s at 7.30pm the PCC met to consider the proposals. We are awaiting the return of the bishop from her summer break in order to finalise the negotiations of the Development Group. Then an extraordinary meeting of the PCC will be called in October, once Mike, Caroline and the Development Group have met with each other and the bishop.

THE PARISH OF CATHAYS

St. Teilo's and St. Michael's are the two churches which together comprise the Parish of Cathays. Further information about the Parish and the two churches can be found on the Parish website.
